Bible Reading Plans

During this season, we are being intentional about joining together to pursue Jesus in a wholehearted way. One of the ways that we pursue Jesus is to get to know Him better by spending time with Him. Reading Scripture is a great way to do that.

If you’re looking for a Bible reading plan to help you along, here are a few ideas:

  1. Read through all four gospels every month.
  2. Read through the entire Bible.
  3. Find a thematic reading plan on the Bible app that fits your season of life.

Read the Gospels

source: Annie F. Downs

Each month, read through all four gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John) to get a picture of who Jesus is and how he lived his life. As you read, write down things that stood out to you, questions you have, or ways in which God is encouraging you to live differently.

The beauty of this plan:

  • Each month you get to start over. Missed a few days? No worries– just keep on moving. You’ll get to that section again next month.
  • You can use a new version of the Bible each month. There are so many to choose from (NIV, ESV, NLT, Message, etc.). Each month you’ll read the same story, but in a slightly different way, which will help you to see things that maybe you didn’t see the month before.
  • Ultimately, by using this plan you are diving deep into the life of Jesus, and are bound to know Him better by the end.

Read through the entire Bible.

Another option is to read the Bible in its entirety over the course of a year. You can start at the beginning and read right through, you can read chronologically, or you can read a little Old Testament and a little New Testament every day.

The beauty of this plan:

  • You will get to see the big overarching story of Scripture, which will help you to better understand who God is and His plan for the world.
  • As you read, consider watching the Bible Project’s Old Testament and New Testament videos to help you along. Each video gives you an overarching view of the entire book, helping you to better understand what’s going on.

Find a thematic reading plan on the Bible app that fits your season of life.

For some of us, we’re going through something in our lives where we need directed reading to grow us in a particular area. The Bible app has hundreds of reading plans available: from work to leadership, anxiety to relationships, there’s a plan for you.

The beauty of this plan:

  • You can find out what the Bible says about something that you’re going through right now.
  • Generally these plans are shorter, allowing you to read about a variety of topics in a short amount of time.
  • There are also plans for youth and kids– the whole family can join in!
  • When choosing a plan, choose the “read with friends” option to stay connected and share your responses with those you love!

Remember, the goal in all of this isn’t to “complete the plan”, but the goal is to know Jesus more. So, choose a plan, invite a friend and let’s get reading!
