Light of the World: An Artist Series

Last month, we invited Blackhawk artists to create and share pieces in response to the prompt “Light of the World.”

When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world.  Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” (John 8:12)

We received some beautiful pieces, and over the next few weeks, we will be sharing a portion of them here on the blog. As we observe the season of Advent and Christmas together as a community, we hope that this series of art helps you to experience the presence of God and the significance of Jesus’ incarnation in a richer way.

Artist Statement: Dustin & Andrea Pence

As I read John 8:12, the statement “spoke again to the people” captured my attention. As a parent, I recognize the large number of times I need to say something to my kids. I’m not talking about the disciplinary elements of parenthood, but the simple reassurances that have to do with the many questions my children have about life:  “What about this?” and “What about that?”

Jesus was reassuring his followers that He would be there with them through anything and everything. The darkness that exists in the world, and the struggles we will face in that darkness, can not overcome us if we walk in a right relationship with Jesus. His example, and the gift of the Holy Spirit, provide us a “light” that will never fail us.

This song (though admittedly still in project form) is trying to capture that notion of daily walking with Jesus. A relationship with Jesus is not an event. A relationship with Jesus is active and alive. It needs to be considered each and every day. This song is hoping to create a collective response of, “Ok, I will continue to follow you, Jesus” to His original call to action in John 8:12.

Speak Again

Music by Dustin Pence // Lyrics by Dustin Pence, Andrea Pence

If I follow you, you will give me light.
Though this world is dark, you will hold me tight.
I don’t walk alone. I’m not on my own.
Things will be alright because I am in the light.

I hear you speak again, “Walk in the light.”
I hear you speak again, “I am the light of the world.”

Darkness came from all around.
Hope it seemed to fade.
But up from above and down deep within.
The light made its way when sweet Jesus came in.

So I will follow you, body, soul, and mind.
Lord, and when I stumble be there by my side.
I am not afraid and even through the pain.
Things will be alright because I am in the light.
