#trending: Immigration

As we continue in our series #trending, this week Charles Yu tackled the topic of immigration. He helped us to see how the theme of being an immigrant is used throughout Scripture for the people of God, and how our response to the foreigner or alien in our midst is always to be love.

Further Engagement:

Though this may be a currently controversial and polarizing topic in our country (and throughout the world), as with all the topics covered in this series, we want to encourage thoughtful, respectful, biblically-informed dialogue and engagement. Here are some resources to help you do so:

From our 2017 Blackhawk Church Justice and Faith event, we encourage you to watch Matthew Soren’s plenary presentation, “Welcoming the Stranger”.

A more condensed (under 10min), but thorough treatment of the topic is this “Q” talk by Jenny Yang  (Matthew Soren’s co-author of Welcoming the Stranger):

From our own Evangelical Free Church of America denomination, we encourage you to listen to Wheaton professor, Daniel Carroll and his podcast presentation, “Immigration and the People of God”:

Deeper Reflection:

One of our desires in this series is to encourage respectful, loving discussion and dialogue among ourselves and others. If you are not already in a group at Blackhawk, we encourage you to consider it. Please check out our groups page here:

Free small group guide: Discovering and Living God’s Heart for Immigrants: A Guide to Welcoming the Stranger. This guide was created to help a small group of people move towards action as an expression of their Christian faith. It was produced by Matthew Sorens and Jenny Yang of World Relief (authors of Welcoming the Stranger). Request it online here (towards the bottom of the page):
